About my drawings

Ágnes Hincz, 1998

  • Drawing is not representation but the joint work of the brain and the hands.
  • I think art starts with the facility of the hands.

Regardless how passionately I draw, it cannot represent my feelings. I simply am not interested in drawings that cut out a rectangular piece from the world. Drawing is not representation but the joint work of the brain and the hands. And, at the very least, has virtually made my hands stronger as I use both my left and right (and in this order). I have tried several media but eventually had to construct my own, one which could keep up with me.

The lines I draw never follow the forms of the world but the movements of my hands. The drawings are traces of meditative shows on paper. I am not interested in composition, or in the work of art. Each of my drawings begins with the first line which later follows its own laws. That thing which we call invention has its place, yet I beleive art begins with the skill of the hands.

I have made many drawings and feel as though I can do more and more everyday. There is an inexhaustible source inside me. I see them everywhere. That's why I learned to draw and just recently share them with others. This is why I began exhibiting them.
